Barnes Family Funerals - Joe Derrel Herd, Jr.

Joe Derrel Herd, Jr. (Joey) passed away Saturday, July 15, 2017 in Cox South Hospital, surrounded by his family, after a long battle with cancer. He was born on October 3, 1947 in Chadwick, the son of Joe Herd Sr. and Lois (Schweppe) Herd. Joey was saved at the age of 12 at Chadwick Union Church and was baptized in the river at Garrison Bridge. He was united in marriage to Kathy (Ewing) Herd on June 17, 1968. Joey was a lifelong cattle farmer at his home in Chadwick and employed as a bus driver at Chadwick School District for 25 years. Joey loved his job as a bus driver and enjoyed giving the kids candy, soda and singing with them on the school bus. Joey will forever be remembered by his family and friends. He always took care of others better than he took care of himself. Joey took pride and was blessed with a large family. He enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids and enjoyed being ornery and playing tricks on all of them. Joey enjoyed going out to eat and to garage sales with Kathy to try to find as many bargains as possible. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathy; two children, Micheal Herd and wife Verna, Melissa Daugherty and husband Kurtis; his mother Lois Herd; one sister, Andrea Smith and husband Melvin; two brothers, John Herd and wife Gloria, Danny Herd and wife Brenda. One foster child, Adam McCord; five grand-children, Megan Maggard and husband Matthew, Blake Daugherty and wife Jennifer, Chelsea Hicks and husband Nate, Brent Daugherty and Brylee Daugherty; nine great-grandchildren, Avery, Mayce, Emma, Cylea, Easton, Brantley, Jaelynn, Quinn and one on the way, due in October. Joey was preceded in death by his father, Joe Derrel Herd, Sr. Funeral services for Joey will be 11:00A.M. Tuesday, July 18, 2017 in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark. Burial will follow in Chadwick Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service in the funeral home. Donations are suggested to Chadwick Community Care To Learn. I want to extend our sympathies from the First Freewill Baptist Church of Ozark. Our Pastor, Gary Mitchener, is out of state at this time and asked me to represent the church, which I’m most pleased to do.

We’re supporting Joey’s family in our prayer and asking that the Lord would grant you special comfort after the loss of your loved one. May God’s grace be with you all!

Kathy, you and your family are in my heart and prayers. I know what you are going through. The only comfort is from our loving and gracious Heavenly Father. We don’t see His greater plan and there are no words that can truly express my sympathy and empathy for what you all are going through. I won’t be able to make it to the funeral and I hate that. Just know You and your family are in my prayers.

So sorry to hear about your loss. Although I hadn’t seen him in years I thought of him often as a classmate in school and the good times I spent with him at home when we were in grade school. I will always remember how good Lois and Joe Sr. was to me when I visited. Due to a prior commitment I will not be able to attendance the services. However all his family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
