John Scanlan October 1, 1937 - April 14, 2023

Date of Funeral

April 19, 2023

John Francis Scanlan was born October 1, 1937, in Union County, Creston, Iowa. At age 85, John left this life for his heavenly home Friday, April 14, 2023, in Cox South Hospital, Springfield, Missouri. John proudly served his country for four years with the United States Navy on the USS Ranger and at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Washington State. On March 18, 1963, John received an Honorable Discharge from the armed forces.

On April 15, 1961, John was united in marriage to his wife and life-long companion of 62 years, Bonnie Hodges. John and Bonnie raised two daughters, Debbie and Shelly and one son, Russell, in Arlington, Washington. John worked hard as a carpenter for many years and also built three homes for his family. After his retirement, John and Bonnie enjoyed spending summers at Lake Tyee in Washington State and winters in Arizona. For the last ten years they enjoyed living near family in Ozark, Missouri. John made friends easily, and with Bonnie they developed many life-long friendships. John deeply loved his family and spent many wonderful years as husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa. We will miss him and the friendly welcome and acceptance we always received.

John is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his daughters, Debbie Lindsey and husband Paul, Shelly Ramsey and husband Dennis, his son, Russell Scanlan and wife Lesa; six grandchildren, Asher (Bethany) Ramsey, Rachel (Jon) Wood, Hannah (Alex) Bryant, Claire (Andrew) Sinelli, John Scanlan, and Jessie Scanlan; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one remaining sister, Bernadette Morris, and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his mother and father, Elizabeth and Joseph Scanlan; two brothers, Donald Scanlan and James Scanlan; and four sisters, Elizabeth Gray, Mary Welsch, Theresa McCall, and one sister who died at birth.

Funeral services for John will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 19, 2023, in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral and begin at 1:00 P.M. Burial will follow in Hopedale Cemetery with full military honors. Online condolences may be shared at www.barnesfamilyfunerals.com.–

    Bonnie and kids,
Sending you my deepest condolences at the passing of John. I enjoyed seeing this pic as he looks so much like I remember him. I have many fond memories of a childhood spent visiting relatives in Villisca and spending time with Mom’s family at reunions and gatherings. I still remember heading out on the Amtrak one summer to visit you all in Washington, we really felt adventurous as that was a big trip for us. I know he will be dearly missed, but I hope it brings you comfort to know so many were there to welcome him with open arms and much happiness as he is reunited with his siblings and parents. Praying for you all.

    Bonnie and family,
I have lots of good memories with Aunt Bonnie and Uncle John! You visited mom and dad on the farm and would bring your camper. We spent time doing lots of visiting, cooking, and relaxing. What special memories we made together. Also, I remember the Amtrak trip mom, Kathleen, and I took to come and visit you in Washington. My prayers and thoughts are with you all during this time of grief. May God wrap his loving arms around you all and be your comfort as you walk this valley. Godspeed Uncle John! Give my mom and dad a hug.
