Mary June Applegate (Ewing), age 86, of Chadwick, Missouri, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2024, in Ozark Nursing and Care. One of six children, Mary was born June 24, 1938, in Keltner, Missouri to Mildred and Hutson Ewing. On October 13, 1956 she was united in marriage to Loren Eugene “Gene” Applegate.
Mary lived nearly all of her life in Christian County. She grew up in the Mound community and settled in Chadwick, Missouri in the 1960s to raise her family. She spent much of her time with her sisters, raising their families together, and was lucky to live near both Janie Smoot and Judy Walker. As her children got older, she enjoyed traveling, especially to visit her sisters Jo Ann and Nancy Maggard in California.
She will be remembered for her love of old time gospel music shows, evening walks around Chadwick, attending local arts and craft fairs, and making homemade ice cream with family members.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, her parents, and siblings Sam Ewing, Jo Ann McKay, and Nancy Maggard.
Surviving Mary are her children, Michael Eugene Applegate, Kirk Douglas (Lori) Applegate, and Cynthia “Cindy” Kay Conrad. She was a devoted grandmother to Caleb (Kaitlin) Applegate, Codie (Cody) Secrest, Michael Ashley Applegate (Joshua Kling), Cole Applegate, Tanner Conrad, and Emily Applegate. Mary was also a proud great-grandmother to Josie Secrest, Bailee Applegate, Madison Cole, Everett Secrest, Ridge Applegate, Gatlin Applegate, and Stevie Secrest. Mary is also survived by her sisters, Janie Smoot and Judy Walker.
