I just found out about Mike’s passing and am deeply saddened. Mike was a huge part of my life back in high school, we were best friends and inseparable. I have so many good memories of our crazy escapades together and there were a LOT!
Mike and I both loved music, but due to the influences of his older sister (Vicky), it was Mike who turned me on to groups like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. We also loved our dirtbikes and would just tear up our old South Kansas City neighborhood riding around visiting friends.
I am not really sure why, (it’s been so long) but we eventually grew apart. I would still occasionally do a web search for him to see where he was living, but I was reluctant to reach out to him, now I wish I had.
I looked him up again today after seeing an ad for a 1970 Mustang for sale on Craigslist and that’s how I learned of his passing. It was just like the one his Mother (Shirley) owned back in the day (except her’s was red). Mike and I would sneak that car, a green Pinto and my Mother’s car (1971 Chevy Nova) out every chance we could and basically learned to drive that way. I can vividly remember one time when he lost control of the Mustang on the Bannister road bridge over 435, we did a 360 and came to a stop between the guard rails, not even a scratch on the car, we sat there for a second as the smoke from the tires blew by and then got the hell out of there. Good times… Heck, I still have a set of cylinder heads off a 350 small block that was in a fast, gold 1970 Camaro he owned many years ago.
If you have access to Mike’s yearbook from Hickman Mills HS 1979 (Pride ’79), on about the 4th page, you will see a picture of he and I seated at a lunch table talking to our friends. I am the one wearing the LED wristwatch on a ridiculously wide black leather band.
A part of me died that day with Mike and I will always regret not reaching out when I could have, My heartfelt condolences to Shirley, Maynard, Derrick, Bobbi and everyone else whose life was touched by my buddy Mike… RIP
